Ethiopians angered by Sheikh Al-Amoudi's campaign for ruling regime
26 Apr 2005 (Addis Zena, in Amharic)
It has been learnt that Shaykh Muhammad Hussayn al-Amoudi was seen campaigning in front of over 5,000 people wearing a T-shirt with the EPRDF symbol - the bee. In his speech he said he opposes the [opposition] Coalition for Unity and Democracy [CUD] for using the insignia of St George [football club] - the English letter V.
Many were amazed and others angered when they saw Shaykh Al- Amoudi wearing a T-shirt with the EPRDF symbol - the bee, at function to lay the foundation stone for the construction of St George's stadium on last Saturday, 15 Miazia [23 April] at CMC [presumably a name of a place where the venue was]. Some said the campaign made by Shaykh Al-Amoudi and Mr Arkebe [Addis Ababa mayor] for the EPRDF exploiting the situation was very dangerous not only to St George sports club but in general to the development of sport in the country. Especially the comments made by the Shaykh regarding the insignia without mentioning the name of CUD had really angered supporters of the party.
It was learnt that Shaykh Al-Amoudi is going to cover 40m birr [4.6m US dollar] out of the 50m birr required to build the stadium, the rest will be covered by the sport fraternity. At the ceremony senior government officials, Haile Gebreselasea [the athlete] and other renowned dignitaries were in attendance. [Passage omitted: Others present].
One person reacting to Shaykh Al-Amoudi's remarks said that "Although the man adores Ethiopia and Ethiopians adores him as well, his act demonstrates that he has a special relations with the EPRDF and this might affect his popularity in the country". Especially, since he is a foreigner, he should not have acted like that.
