Al-Amoudi Grants $20m to Clinton Foundation

Sheikh Mohammed Ali Al-Amoudi has given a grant of 20 million dollars to the Clinton Foundation on Friday, May 11, 2007, in order to support the latter’s effort in fighting HIV/Aids in Ethiopia. The Foundation, established by former US President Bill Clinton in 2002, is known for its knack in dealing with multinational drug companies producing expensive medications, and makes these drugs available at cheaper prices in developing countries. It had received 100 million dollars from UNITAID, which raises its money from airlines levies in participating countries, including France and England.

Al-Amoudi Pledges Over 25 Mln Birr for Construction of Harar Cultural Center

Business tycoon, philanthropist Sheik Mohammed Hussien Al-amoudi on Sunday pledged to cover over a half of the estimated 50 million required to build the new cultural museum in Harar, an official with the region's millennium council told The Daily Monitor on Tuesday.
According to Public Relations Officer Bushira Mohammed, Sheik Al-Amoudi made the pledge after laying a cornerstone at the future site of the construction project while he was there to attend the closing session of the Harar millennium celebration which lasted for a month.
The new museum building will consist of multi- purpose activities such as public library, conference rooms, and international gymnasiums and achieves, Zeidan Bekri, Bureau head of the Harar Culture and Tourism said.
Zeidan said the preliminary design of the project has already been completed, and the actual construction project expected to be completed in two-three years will commence next year."We have secured over half of the money needed, which is ample to start the huge investment and the remaining money will be raised from funds from donors, people and the government," the Bureau head said. During his brief stay in the city of Harar, sheik Al-amoudi paid a to a private museum run by a private citizen .There he saw collections of hand written chronicles, some of them as old as 800 years, and ancient coins used by the Amirs( religious leaders), who ruled the fortified city.
After the visit, Philanthropist Al Amoudi who was impressed by the efforts of the individual, donated one million birr to help the expansion of the museum, according to Bushira.The museum has thus been named Sheik Mohamed Al-amoudi Museum in recognition of his valuable contribution.
In related news, Al-amoudi announced plans to construct a five-star hotel in the City of Harar after the regional government proposed investment opportunities to the investor.
The Sheik is expected to send a team of experts this week to see and decide the place for the construction of the hotel.
The regional government is said to have reassured the billionaire that it will warmly welcome the team and facilitate its works there, Zeidan noted.
