Ethiopia - Al-Amoudi eyes R200m property in South Africa

A South African paper is reporting that Ethiopia born Billionaire Mohammed Al-Amoudi is looking to buy what's being described as "arguably South Africa’s priciest piece of vacant land in Sandton, north of Joburg".

The site is 110000m² and it is reportedly on the market for R200-Million (25.6 Million US Dollar).

The site is earmarked for residential and hospitality rights. Council documents show that developments could range from a 35-unit townhouse complex to a 125- room hotel or a shopping complex, according to a report by the Times.

Sandton is one of the expensive neighborhoods of Jo'burg suburb where most of the crime wary wealthy locals live. With all folks he sends to SA for medical treatment, I guess it is time for him to build some accommodations for those patients and a retreat for himself.
Getting a little extra cash on the side by building additional investment properties like a hotel doesn’t hurt either!

Dear moderator:
It depends on how you define the idea of doing something important to your country.

For me this guy is the one who is hurting the so called free market in the country the most next to EFFORT. Because he is a key investor doesn’t qualify him for preferential treatment in his investment endavours. Can you give me a single case where his conglomerate lost a bid for its rival in Ethiopia?? Don’t waste your time looking for an answer cos such a case never happened. As a student of economics, I know very well such a system has a serious consequences for the overall economy ingeneral and the private sector in particular. Believe it or not the current anti competitive business behaviors prevailing in the country (the grand gold scam and forged currency print) had their root from the prejudiced economic and political system devised by the TPLF regime. This system is purposely designed to protect the interest of few business groups, the sheik, EFFORT, Tigrays mainly.

In addition, my friend, if you are thinking that he is investing in Ethiopia for the sake of philanthropy, you are making a serious mistake! Didn’t you guys told us, a couple of days ago, his wealth sky rocketed to 9 billion?? Doesn’t this news ring a bell in your head?? He is profiting, he is making a huge amount of money from his every single venture in Ethiopia.

Inconclusion, it is a way better for the country to have thousands of competitive companies owned by small scale business people than a single billionaire controlling every aspect of the economy in monopoly! He is profiting at the expense of the country’s free market !!!!!

This Sheikh is like the Paris Hilton of Ethiopia, we have to read and discuss about his non-ending financial ventures, we are saturated by this sheikh's news. Don't you have anything else to present us so we can shred each other over a new topic. Don't take me wrong, I am a big fan of Sheikh Al-Amoudi

his father is from yamen. He has done
a lot for ethiopia, but when you try
to claim him as your own it is a little
disingenious. No body from ethiopia can
accomplish what he has because you are

Varnero construction has won a bid to build the 20 storey headquarters of Awash International bank and Awash Insurance.

Varnero will sign a contract agreement with the board of directors of the Awash bank and insurance company on Tuesday April 11, 2006, at the Hilton Hotel.

Varnero won the bid beating Midroc construction and Narinco Lalibela.

When the tender for the building was first floated in February 2005 there were eight companies who bought bid documents of which only five submitted the documents when the bid opened.

Metaferia consulting Engineers, project consultants and designers of the building, will supervise Varnero while construction is underway.

The construction, which should be completed in three and a half years, will be built behind the National Theater on Ras Abebe Aregaye Street.

Awash leased the 2,950sqm land from the city administration eight years ago and, because of a court case, the land was not handed over until 2005.

In the 10 years of its existence Awash Bank’s paid up capital has grown from 24.2 million to 135.7 million birr. The bank recorded a 34.7 million birr profit after taxes as of December 31, 2004, exceeding the previous year’s profit by 17.3 million birr.

Awash International Bank is the first private bank in Ethiopia and has shown steady growth over the past decade.

Truth be Told,

Just for the moment, may I take the liberty to call you "Our Economist"?

So, you said that you are a student of economics, but not a graduate, I assume.

If you are what you claim to be, then you should at least bother your little mind to light us up, as to how this much sought after billionaire's investment might hurt Ethiopia's economy.

Also mentioned is, "a system", that by your economist's point of 'view' would have a serious cosequence.

"Our Economist"! Can you please enlighten us how is that so?

And my friend, when you do explain, to avoid the embarrasment, please try to refrain from the jargons of Economics.

I think that there is more possing in your mind than we are aware of.

Peace.

All you haters....Al-Amoudi will around for a long time to come...and his family after him...get used to it or CHANGE YOUR CITIZENSHIP...

And to those obsessed with Al-Amoudi's citizenship....HE HAS DUAL CITIZENSHIP...AMERICAN/SAUDI...But feels very Ethiopian...

Babur

are u a real babur or what?? though you sound very ignorant let me explain my stand on your "comment".

First i comment here nazret not to enlighten anybody but just to tell the TRUTH. i know my truth never fitted into the little heads of the TIGRAYS around like you because mostly they are beyond your comprhension.

Second, i can derive for you the formula to show you how monopoly and anti-competitive behaviour hurts consumers and the society in general, but as i said before i dont want to waste my time in vain, you wont get my points.

Third, just to give you the enlightmnet that u seek very much, very recently MS was fined by EU in what is known to be the highest fine for breaching an anti-competitive behaviour, around 2 BN uSD. The Europeans didnt say "Oh MS is the largest company, or the owner is the richest man, how come we fine such a key investor"!! The company crossed the line, and its fined. MS is fined mainly because it tried to control the software market in europe by engaging in anti competitive behaviour. That iss the difference between TPLF and EU, in TPLF tigrays and the sheik are ABOVE THE LAW!!!

Fourth, the guy we are talking has a significant financial stake in sweden too, but he never gets the preferential treatment that he enjoys under TPLF in ethiopia, dont tell me that its because sweden is rich country though?? its not who is rich that matters, its the poor countries that needs free competition the most for the best of their economy.

It seems to me that you are protecting the sheik simply becuase he is TPLF, right?? and becuase you fill like my ideas can potentially hurt your TPLF,right?? competition will not hurt anybody. its a common good!!

Truth to be told aka 'zeregna'- You wrote "...know my truth never fitted into the little heads of the TIGRAYS around like you because mostly they are beyond your comprhension..."--Most of the comments you made are full of racism-etnicism. So every point you are trying to make is null and void. That is why you don't make any sense at all. Cleanse your soul of hate before you tell as about your stupid economic theory. Ethiopia needs investors with big capitals-he is one of the big ones. The complex issue of economics will be addressed when our peoples basic needs are met. If there is any investor who will make a d/ce even to one extra ethiopian , he/she is wellcome until the whole 80 million people basic needs are met. We have the resource ,we have the labour, we need capital-investors of any capacity are a source of capital. So we will accomodate them as best as we can. You are the kind of person Ethiopia doesn't need rihgt now-I have never seen you write any positve things in this forum-your comments are always full of hate, garbage and you are one of those few bankrupt "ene awklhalew diaspora' who is lucky enough to get his education and graduate by affirmative action. All this companies are owened by this man. The goverment allowed him to own this vital economic sector belongs to us and generation of Ethiopians. The natural resources are getting exported in alarming speed. As the same time our education and health system is dying, where there are the rich private schools and clinics poping in every corner. That is not fair to poor Ethiopian parents when their kids become day labourers for a few. This allowes uncontrolled distruction of our wealth and enviroment. For those people who think free trade is doing us good, look our inflation. To learn from NORWAIAN busines practice, they say natural resources belong to now and generations to come and should be dealt carefully, i couldnt agree more. When you hear Europians say Ethiopia's economy is doing good, they are stealing candy from a child.

This man should be stopped, i am sure all of you think the same if he were white person, but when it comes to wealth they are all the same. You cant get this rich if you cared and shared with others. He is opportunistic to capitalize using this goverment, if he cares for Ethiopia where was he all this years, Ethiopia always needed help.
Think, Dont loose your pride people, Some of you thing he is God sent to Ethiopia, think him the opposite when it comes to our economy. Ethiopia deserve better.
