Ethiopia - Meles awards Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi with special millennium golden medal

September 14, 2007

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ENA) -
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi awarded Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi, the renowned tycoon, late Thursday with the ‘first special millennium golden medal’ for his exemplary deeds for the development of Ethiopia and its people.

During the awarding ceremony, Meles said Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi is elected as “Special Millennium Person” since the businessman has practically proved his love and sympathy for Ethiopia and its people.

Meles said the sheik has been launching various investment projects in Ethiopia, even without proving the profitability of the projects, due to his love and sympathy for the country and for the peoples of the nation.

He also contributed a lot for the success of the celebration of the new Ethiopian millennium, according to Meles.

The honorable businessman becomes the first to be awarded with the medal, he said, other personalities would also be awarded for their exemplary deeds for the development of the country over the coming one year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Agriculture and Rural Development, Addissu Legesse said on his part that Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi is named as “Special Millennium Person” for his extraordinary deeds for the benefit of Ethiopia and its people.

The awarding ceremony followed by a banquet attracted senior government officials, diplomatic corps, and other invited guests.

Le Yetot aba amelakwa.

The part about Al Amoudi's "love and symphaty for Ethiopia and its people" was the funniest and dumbest part of it all. That's why he stood on the demolished home of my great grand father and told us about ze seventeen years death of mountains and mountains of Tegedalays which brought him where he is. Who could tell him about the seven hundred years of sacrifices we paid. Who can tell him , unlike what his "gebrebelas" are saying, that he is a hater and a divider. Who professes as an Ethiopian, but fundementally do not understand the double pain and suffering Ethiopians are going thru, first under Dergue, and now under the haters from a single town. There were plenty who used to sing about,"ye hayalu Italian Mengist, and its benevolent leader Mussoilni who freed the slaves and brought mountains and mountains of achievements." But we all know the rest of the story. Freedom, freedom, freedom, freedom, its inevitable.

This corrupt and corrupting person al amoudi, has actually a net negative effect on the country's economy. Do you know he has clealned the Ethiopian national bank in loans of multibillion birr?
By the way all his businesses are profitable and Meles knows that. The corrupting taycoon has bought Meles and his wife a CAddilac.

Ethiopia can do better without this man. Let no one fool you into thinking that he is investing to benefit the country.

What a shameless act of abuse of office. As insiders had made it clear, the Sheik took in the money Meles and others stolen from the governemnt coffer and gave them a legal channel to shuffle around their sin (stolen aid money). It is not a surprise at all. But this good for nothing fella is operating with absolute monopoly particularly in the area of Gold mining and export. it seems as if the nation is his personal belonging, thanks to the tail-wagging animals from dedebet!
They have lost their mind totally!
The governemnt does not make any secret out of its stealing business: have you noted the sponsors of Walta Information(lie) Center? Ethiopian Electric and Light Corporation and Ethiopian Air Lines are the cash cows of these ruthless thicks. They have at hand what they never even started to imagine is possible by way of fortune and do you expect them to care about the citizens suffrage? What have to get far more serious and mean business in our fight for democracy. The Melse & Co. gang do not know democracy, not even a bit. All they know is stealing and living like there is no tomorrow!!!

It is very sad that there is a debate about this man. If we believe in democracy, it should not bother anybody which party he supports. If we believe that those who don't support our party are enemies of our country, it means we don't believe in democracy. As individual, irrespective of which party he supports, he has given much more to Ethiopia than a thousand other investors of any nationality combined with very little profit in sight.

My people, Al Amoudi is a true Ethiopian, a man who could have easily invested his fortune in other places where profits would be greater (not even sure he actually profits in Ethiopia; and if he did, I for one would be very happy), but he chooses to put his money in his homeland; that's commendable.

For those of you who don't like him b/c he endorsed Meles in the previous elections, I accuse you of hypocrisy.
If we want our rights to support CUD, UEDF, or others, we ought to respect the rights of others of supporting TPLF. Rights are guaranteed to all, not just us. That, I think, is what we were fighting for.

Who are any of you to insult the Shiekh? Unlike your usual ventings, Shiekh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi has put his power to good use while the rest of you put your power to incite youth to riot. Sheikh Mohammed Al-Amoudi is ten-times a true Ethiopian compared to the "Ethiopian" wannabes of U Street!

Sheikh Mohamed Al-Amoudi has only been permitted to invest in his motherland based on the EPRDF's committment to privitization and a pro-poor economic strategy that focuses on the rural poor. Shiekh Mohammed Al-Amoudi has donated millions of dollars to NGOs such as the Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America, the Saint George's soccer team, Gonder University, a young beautiful Ethiopian woman who was attacked by a stalker earlier this year who was attacked by acid -- he flew her to Paris for first-class tratment. Not to mention, the Sheikh has his own medical center, Sheraton Addis -- which as he promised, is open to all Ethiopians rich or poor to visit the property and the gardens, etc. The list is endless.

Furthermore, the government aside, the Sheikh is the largest employer in Ethiopia. He contributes in many and all different ways. He provides scholarships, medical treatment, grants, sponsorship, jobs, etc. It was because of the Shiekh that Addis Ababa sees fireworks every year for the new year not to mention the spectacular fireworks of 2000 and his $10 million millennium hall that he built. Honeslty, without the Sheikh, the Millennium Council of Ethiopia would be financially strapped. Honeslty, without the Shiekh, thousands upon thousands of people would have been job-less and those bread winners of families who work for MIDROC Ethiopia would be broke and would limit themselves to prostitution and begging.

Long live the Sheikh. In my opinion, the Government should re-name a district (kifle ketema) of Addis Ababa after him and a road after him.

My the good God/Allah bless the Shiekh, His Excellency Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi.

Sure the man loves his country, and as some of you said, he could have invested his money somewhere else. And he can even get those 18 yrs old girls anywhere else; they also like it, it is not just him.

I agree he should have been better than one who looks for too teen girls. More than that, he could stay away from Woyane.

So I like him as an Ethiopian investing that much fortune in the country. Woyane suckers could benefit some but the country and the people get the most part of the benefit directly or indirectly. Don't see it only in terms of direct money, but the civilization that comes along, that is what most matter to the country, not the immediate money part which Woyane sucks.

Note that, he will be there after Woyane, if Woyane leaves office in 50yrs :), OMG.

Peace and Prosperity to Ethiopia in the new Millennium.

We all have our individual support to any party. I support Kinjit but I also support people who give themselves and their wealth to their country. There are thousands of educated Ethiopians all over the world. None including me want to go back to mother land and work for the fraction that we are making in foreign lands.
It is not because Tigrays are in power; even if your own tribe is at the helm, you will not exchange this easy and abundant money for peanut money that you would be making in Ethiopia. PURE GRRED.

Al-Amoudi brought his hard earned money from his adopted country Saudi Arabia and invested in Ethiopia.

Guys ... Hello.. This man could easily build a resort in Tunisia and make more money from European tourists than the hotel he built in Addis. He opened a bank so that people can borrow money and start business. Again he could have done elsewhere but he chose his birth country. And still he does not get any recognition from some ingrate like most people on this

There is a saying in my beloved Harargue... "look at the mirror and tell it directly that you are honest.. don't try to persuade others, just tell it to the mirror"

How many of you guys have done something for your country... besides talking all kind of rubbish. Talk is cheap fellow compatriots. Show it with some kind of effort that you really love your country. There are thousands of Ethiopians who had reach the age of retirement... did any of you guys planing to spend even three months to educate or do something for the sake of the multitude who did not have the chance to go out of the country and improve their living standards.

How about all those nouveau rich of Addis who hide their profit in Dubai and Malaysia and used the Ethiopian banks to make more money for themselves and their immediate family. Can rich family adopt a child from the street and give this kid a chance to improve his or her fate??

Come on Al-Amoudi has done so much for the country at least be grateful. He does not ask anything from any of you guys.

We speak and write much about political freedom but the paradox is that we, at the same time, want to restrict some citizens’ freedom. AlAmoudi is a citizen and has the right, as was put by many, to vote for or support any political party of his choice. Nobody has the right to impose any specific political views or political course on him or on any other citizen, if political freedom refers to those liberties that citizens may possess compatibly with being members, sympathizers or supporters of a political association or party. What disgusting double standard is this? Without being carried away by emotions so as to use illegitimate means to defend a “legitimate cause”, anybody who opposes his political association could use economic boycott against his businesses or use political measures; if they have political muscles, not insults, defamation and slander. AlAmoudi is a great man, Ethiopia is very lucky to have, and is doing a unique job to help his country. We may recognize that role or deny it, but it is objectively there for anybody to see. As an investor, it is obvious that he benefits and that is natural, but at the same time, he uniquely contributes to the development of the country. What is the problem if his interests as an investor and those of the county coincide? Are we against his investment or political affiliation? Is there an investor who does not benefit? I am in no way related to AlAmoudi, but as an Ethiopian, I deeply thank him for not investing his money in other parts of the world, where he would be welcomed with a red carpet. Is it rational to expect an investor of his size not to support the current government? Isn’t it his right as a citizen, to begin with? It seems that there is much we have to learn about tolerance and political freedom, and try to see things from the long-term benefits of the country. Where is the wisdom and partisanship, if I stand against a unique investor just to oppose his support to the current government? Can’t I support his investment role and at the same time criticize his political stand?

In any western society, the rich have the right to choose whatever politcal party they support. We see it in US all the time. So the guy has the right to choose and who to support. It is shame to sit here and judge while each of us have the choice of what to eat, drive and wear. He has employed those in need regardless of his political choices. Please go back home and do something instead of running your comments like a tab water and please be proactive. He didn't steal from us, what was there to be stolen. Our resources? And where were we to use them when we were in need? Why are we considered one of the poorest nation in the world if we had something to be stolen from? We could have saved millions of people. It is really ridicilous to accuse him of stealing. I don't know the guy to like or dislike him, but there is a lot he has done for those in need.

Since the elderly brought the miracle ot our land i see only a popsetive development. I am more convinced by each day. i always thinking the way how to thank this great man and my wish is fullfiled. Those of you who are not shabia, think of ehtiopia minus alah moodis investment. And think how much you did for your country then you get the picture. Those who are shabia, keep on crying cause alah moodi can invest which ever country he chooses but he chos ethiopia cause ethiopia is his country.

let us have respect to every body evry thing which blong to ethiopia.

Peace for ethiopia death to shabia.

“I was awarded and honored when the Ethiopian government allowed me to invest in my country”, the sheik said, “Let’s work together to pull this country out of poverty within the coming five years”.

I think the sheik deserves more than this. He is a precious Ethiopian. Whatever people are saying about his nationality and his political position, He is so far doing greats for his country. Lets appreciate what we are seeing on the ground. Don't be crudely haters, rather hate and love after you think rationally. I am so disappointed with some of the comments I read here. Most of them are steamed just from simple haterad. Try to re tune your mind set to competently think with the rest of fair Ethiopians who are building the new Ethiopia.

It is amazing to see the impenetrable mentality of some Ethiopians when it comes to truth.Look back at our history. Was there any body who has come back to Ethiopia at the risk of losing profit,( because he could have invested in Asia or Europe for real profit)and enabled thousands of Ethiopians earn bread? Those against AlAmoudi neither have money nor brain to help their country. Innat Hagar!! Ware bicha!!

There's nothing money can't buy. Even a millenium medal.

I have yet to hear of a single business person who's doing work just to support his country and not make profit. That's baloney.

Can anybody provide us some info as to how he was able to make an upward advance on the Fortune 100 in recent years?

I do not have a problem if he's given the medal. I don't blame him for supporting EPRDF either.

Let's stop fantasizing about this rich guy from somewhere who came to save our country. He's just doing business. And who said business poeple do not donate money in the millions to poeple in the government. It's called lobbying.

Ethiopia - Meles awards Sheik Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi with special millennium golden medal

To Al Amoudi,
Enjoy it while it lasts. I am sure you realize you have no future in Ethiopia. The continuous looting of our country by you and Meles has to stop immediately. Your efforts to change Ethiopia has not worked AS IN past years. Reading some history may teach you a lesson.

I advise you to hand over to the "Ethiopian people" all the properties and businesses you have amassed at our cost and leave our country right away. Because, very soon your wives, your brothers, Meles and the other key Woyane leaders including your medals have to leave Ethiopia if necessary by force.

Can anyone of you haters tell me what you have done by helping or employing a single person in your country, all you are capable of doing is hate on other's who are making a difference.
You are not doing any harm to other 's by your hate, your own hate keeps eating you alive and will finally destroy you.

He deserves for what he has done to improve Ethiopia’s industry, but the question I would like to ask is that how much has he gained from all those investment?

I appreciate his input, but are the individuals poor Ethiopians benefiting from his input or is he benefiting PM Meles and the EPRDF?

For me a person that receives state recognition must be a person that have done a lot to help those in need, those without voice and so forth. To name them people like Richard Pankurst, Haile Gebrselassie et al.

I see no differences between Sheik Mohammed Al-Amoudi and Rupert Murdoch.

If you did a fraction of what Ala Moudi did, then you deserve that much to criticize him. No body is perfect in this world, but at least the Sheik did bring some money & development to our nation, so some poor did benefit through employment and so on. What did you do to benefit a single poor in Ethiopia? Talk is cheap.... maybe you sent a $20.00 jeans to your brother ones and you feel like you can talk sheet...invest a $20.00 in a meaningful manner and then you can talk $20.00 worth about a great Ethiopian like the Sheik…. Until you do that… you better shove your stinky socks in big mouth….
Hey and the 18 year old girls….. I do not blame him….. our girls are irresistible, any guy in Ala Moudi’s situation would be guilty of that count. If a girl lowers her self to getting paid for what god gave her it is up to her and God. So,if she as irresistible as most of our Nubian queens who is to be blamed here??? I would spend my $$$ and the rest is b/n me and God… none of your damn business… right!!?? Ala Moudi supports WOYANE, good for him he is exercising his civil rights…. Who the hell are you to take his rights away??? DERG, SHABIYA, or IHAPA???? I love CUD and hopefully in few years I get to vote them into office…. Who the hell is going to tell me to vote otherwise?? WOYANED??? Do not even try it, cause, it is going to be different this time.

Dear Visitors,
I feel nervous when some individual critisizes Mr shake Muhamed Al-Amoudi. We Ethiopians Proud of him. he is the only Ethiopian respected man who is investing his valuable money for the poor Ethiopia. Many poor Ethiopians are getting their daily bread becauuse of his huge Investment. How much of his investment are making profit? . I guess many of them don’t. Most of his investments are robbed by scared persons. He is just doing for his motherland and his people. Forget condemning him being supporting EPRDF. He can support whatever he want. You are supporting your own party . Why not he??. Many persons are opposing EPRDF? What are they bringing to the poor? To a surprize our of 81 000 000 people , only finger counted people are critisizing him . Let them talk what ever they want .No one will hinder Mr Al-Amoudi to do what he has in mind.
He is not the only reach man in the country .There are so many reach Ethiopians too. But we did not see investing something valuable except monoplizing the market to strengthen starvation of the poor in the country. Al-Amoudi, if he wants he can monopolize all the markt to do evil as other ethiopian businessmen are doing. But he is not like that . he is generous and loving his contry men , women , yourgsters and children . His mind only thinks day and night to allivate Ethiopia and inturn to improve the living status of the Poor Ethiopians. So Those you are critisizing the our respected Gentlman (Al-Amoudi) must be evil one’s.

God bless Al-Amoudi. , LONG LIVE TO Al-Amoudi

Which court has decided that Al-Amoudi should be stripped of his Ethiopian citizenship and that his properties should be confiscated? Which history are you recommending for him to read? Are you in a sound state of mind to write such terrorist warnings to a law-abiding citizen who is nobler than all of us and who lives in a world where investments are regulated and protected by international laws? Which one of Ben Ladin’s edicts are you imitating?

Well, well, well, I do not mind if Melese awards Sheki Alamudi. I feel more than I do not mind; it is nice. The Sheki is a businessman not a philanthropist. He does business when it works otherwise he wouldn’t dare; I think. Well, some of us believe that he has benefited the poor a lot, if the poor you are mentioning are the beautiful ladies of Addis, the musicians and ye ketema chulule the pimps I do not have any problem. Truly they have. However, I have to note that for me the poor is the mothers, children, fathers, brothers, sisters and grand moms and dads who are under constant and ruthless torture of poverty. May be one day I hope the Sheki will shift his attention to these people.

Alamoudi is more a Philanthropist than business man in Ethiopia. He has been giving out lots of money to different regions and charities as well. He employed 7,000 people full time until Sheraton was completed. He didn't expect the Sheraton Hotel to generate a profit on his investment. It's more of a gift than anything. He could have invested in other countries where he is guaranted high profit. He wanted the country to be competitive and attract investment. In order to do that you need to to have high class hotels. He's a God send for Ethiopia in the most difficult time. Those who critisize him don't understand about indvidual right and choice. Kinijit were trying to court him. They even sent him an invitation. Some of you bundled together won't even qualify to be his toilet paper. I am just tired of these kind of people.

“nazretoche bandawoche yewusha zeroche nachehu” hana

It would be highly appreciated if you could explain to the readers why staff members deserve these humiliating descriptions. Was the use of such words necessary? Have you thought about more civilized means to show your objection? If the staff members are “yewusha zeroche” , to use your exact words, I do not know how you could be different, unless you tell us that you are an Italian or German or “Kaenchet Teweldish Endehone Anakem.” They just swallowed your vulgar words and kept mum, leaving the readers to go through the test in which all of us have failed. Don’t you think that these are decent Ethiopians who published your garbage but at the same time exposed you to the world and showed you that they do not lower themselves to your level? Their mission is simply to re-publish the articles and the news items as they were in their original sources, creating the forum for the readers to discuss and comment on them. This way, they create the atmosphere that engages the readers in teaching-learning process. They are not your secretaries or staff hired by you to expect them to select texts that are in line with your taste, political affiliation, views and outlooks. At the same time, nobody forced you to visit this website which is basically for readers who are tolerant to different opinions and ready to give and take. Anybody who believes in dogmas or belongs to a herd’s mentality, they should simply remain hooked to their own party websites or hover over those that entertain similar views and thinking. However, you need to be advised that traits of tolerance and flexibility are major sources of peace and stability for any individual, community (I would consider all participants of this forum a community) and the society at large.

[Shagray, thank you so much for your kind words. We have been called many things, but hana has gone a little too far.]

stop complaining.
get a second job.
stop stealing from your workplace.
stop wasting your money at the local ethiopian restaurant.
stop dreaming about bring your own "quick pick" from back home.
treat women with respect and dignity that you would want for your mother or sister.
run fast to your closest community college/trade school.
GO TO CHURCH (if you believe in God)!
then, after you have accomplished these things, come back and we will talk.
