- Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi on Tuesday pledged to provide 50 million birr at a national trade fair and bazaar organized in Gondar town to solicit fund for the construction of the Gondar University Referral Hospital.

Public Relations Advisor to the Prime Minster with a rank Minister Bereket Simon, Chief Administrator of the Amhara State, Ayalew Gobeze and other officials of the federal and regional governments, residents of Gondar town and invited guests attended the opening ceremony.

The trade fair and bazaar was organized by the Gondar Development Association (GDA) in collaboration with the Gondar University.

Speaking on the occasion, GDA President, Tekalign Gedamu said the association has solicited over 1.5 million birr from Gondar natives residing in North America for the construction of the hospital.

The total cost of the construction is estimated to be 175 million birr, Tekalign said, adding, the design work of the hospital which could have cost 800,000 birr has been undertaken by a native engineer free of charge.

Tekalign said wide-ranging activities have been launched to realize the construction by coordinating the public and garnering government support.

Representative of the university, Professor Yigzaw Kebede on his part said the Gondar Hospital, which has been providing services for the last 70 years, could not meet the growing demand for health services due to the ever-growing population of the town.

Chief of the Amhara State Administration, Ayalew Gobeze said the effort of GDA and the university could be exemplary for others.

Ayalew said the state would provide necessary assistance for the realization of the project.

Bereket Simon also appreciated the initiative of the public, the association and the university to construct the hospital.

The guest of honor at the opening ceremony, business tycoon Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi said he is pleased to see the ongoing development activities in the town, and pledged to give 50 million birr for the construction of the referral hospital.

Over 120 companies were taking part in the trade fair and bazaar which remains open for a week.
