Ethiopia collected 7 billion Birr for Nile Dam Project

The people of Ethiopia, the ultimate owner of the nation’s development activities, deserve outstanding honor and recognition, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said.

He called on the public to move to further developmental victories by strengthening the sustainability of the public mobilization and unity witnessed for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project.

Ethiopia collected 7 billion Birr for Nile Dam ProjectThe government of Ethiopia prepared a recognition evening on the eve of the Ethiopian New Year, September 11/2011, to thank those who contributed to the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project.

The recognition and thanksgiving program aims at strengthening the popular motivation created over the past seven months in support of the Renaissance Dam Project.

On the occasion held at Millennium Hall, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi called on the public to continue the support. “I call on the Public to transform to further developmental victories by ensuring the sustainability of the public mobilization and unity witnessed on this particular moment,” Meles said. “The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a tangible manifestation of Ethiopians’ robust commitment to development.”

Chairperson of the National Committee for construction of the Renaissance Dam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hailemariam Dessalegn announced on the event that nearly 7 billion Birr has been collected so far from various sections of the society.

It was on 02 April, 2011 that the construction of the Dam was launched. Three days following the launching ceremony, the project saw a wide ranging support from all sections of the society including the diaspora.

Public servants as well as employees and members of the Defense Force were the pioneers in making financial pledges for the project.

Investors and business community joined the row in purchasing government saving bonds. Farmers also contributed in undertaking environmental conservation activities which would ensure the well being of the Dam.

It was this popular motivation and support that compelled the government to organize the thanksgiving and recognition program on the eve of the Ethiopian New Year.

The recognition has different levels. The silver level award went to companies and individuals contributed from 1 million to 5 million Birr while those contributed from 5 million to 10 million Birr received the gold level award.

Those companies and individuals contributed from 10 million to 20 million Birr received the diamond level award while those contributed 20 million and above received platinum level award.

The government also singled out the business tycoon Sheik Mohammed Ali Alamoudi as a special award winner in recognition of his 1.5 billion Birr pledge for the just concluded Ethiopian Year alone.

The event honored the nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia as the super special award winner for their unreserved and immense contributions to the colossal project.

Speaker of the House of Federation, Kassa Tekleberehan received the trophy from Prime Minister Meles on behalf of the nations, nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia.
